How to beat exam nerves

Hi everyone!

As the exams are on our doorstep, I know that we are all feeling a *little* nervous! I hate feeling nervous before an exam, but sometimes its good as it shows you care and it makes you do really well as you do the best as you can. However, its important that we don’t feel too nervous as it doesn’t make you feel too good, and its the last thing you need before the exam! Therefore, I am going to give you some tips to feel prepared and to beat the exam nerves before and while in the exam as mine are in 3 DAYS!

Pack all your equipment

The night before the exam, make sure you pack your bag full of everything you need. You do not want to be all panicky in the morning while packing your bag and end up forgetting something! The night before, ensure you pack your pencil case full of all the stationary you need and bring spares, incase you lose some or some break! Bring your revision notes and some snacks and water too!

Do not talk to others about their revision, focus on yourself

When you are lining up for your exam and you have those last few moments to flick through your notes, or you are revising with friends, try to ignore their revision booklets or notes and try not to talk about how much revision you have all done. This may start to make you second guess yourself and you may to start to worry that you haven’t done enough. Concentrate on yourself, not the other people around you as the exam is all about what you can do, not the capability of others around you.

Just breathe

When I took my first GCSE last year, I was extremely nervous. I felt so panicked and I just couldn’t think straight at points before and during the exam. If you are feeling nervous, just stop what you are doing and just take deep breathes. Just clear your mind, block out everything around you and focus on your breathing. This will calm you down and clear your thoughts. You may think you don’t want to do that in your exam as it might waste time. But I would rather spend two minutes calming down and then doing really well on the exam, rather than feeling panicked throughout the exam and getting through it with time to spare.

Ensure you eat and drink

Although the last thing you want to do before an exam is eat due to your nerves, it is extremely important that you do! This will give you the energy and make you feel awake and alert and will fuel your brain to work well. You do not want to go into the exam feeling tired and hungry. Also, you do not want to feel hungry during the exam as this will be a distraction, and you do not want the risk of your tummy rumbling in a hall full of students!

Walk outside

If you are feeling nervous, if you can, have some fresh air and go outside before the exam. The fresh air will calm you and hearing normal sounds such as the birds and wind will make you feel as though the situation your in is a bit more normal and not as nerve racking! It will help clear your mind and allow you to think through your thoughts and set your mind on what you are going to do, and how well you are going to do!

Exercise

This may not be something many people think of, but on the day or just before the exam, do a bit of exercise! I’m not talking about a hard core workout for an hour, but a few laps of the school field or even the hall will make you feel better! Exercising realising a hormone called serotonin which makes you happy, which will get rid of all your nervous thoughts. Also, your using all that nervous energy up while exercising so you won’t feel as nervous as you originally did!

I hope these tips will help you all for your upcoming exams! Just remember, as long as you do the best you possibly can, theres not way you could have done any better! Good luck to you all in your exams! Let me know any other tips to beat exam nerves that you have!

I also want to say that as I have exams from May 3rd-June 17th, instead of posting twice a week, I will only be posting on Saturdays as I really need to focus on studying, but obviously I’m going to keep blogging for you all. So until then, just look out for blog posts every Saturday!

  1. Hi Tash! Thanks for sharing all these tips, I’d also add that it’s good to have something sweet to eat after the exam, because like me, some people might start to feel a bit anxious after the whole stress of exams. I hope you do great! All the good vibes for you ❤ x

  2. These tips are great! I remember doing my exams last year and being scared as hell. Oh and the exercise works. It brings down any anxiety or stress levels, and actually helps to secure information in your mind.
